The Focus (Documentation): Patterns in Time

October 13, 2011 at 10:48 pm (Homework, Homework: The Focus (Documentation))

I focused my exploration project on the patterns found in the movement of water. I decided to focus on this because it goes beyong the common observation of still patterns, has a deeper meaning and gives one more to analyze. After observing how the movement of water forms patterns, gathering a vast information about patterns in photos, recordings, and videos, and creating new patterns, I decided to focus on documenting by taking videos. I chose videos because in them one can see the movement of the patterns constantly repeating or changing and one can also hear the patterns of the sounds in the background.

Through my project I want to communicate that patterns are more than just a decorative design. They are everywhere, we just have to stop and realize them to keep noticing them. Patterns are the connections we make between objects and time. They provide a sense of order and harmony and mark the measurement of time. They allow us to make connections between events, one thing leads to another. They don’t have to be constant, patterns can change into other patterns, what matters is that one can create a relationship between them to see the changes and the similarities they produce. Patterns in movement make us see that time has passed and that’s why I titled my project: Patterns In Time.

In the water of the stream that’s on the line I found different kinds of patterns of: form, value, color, line, texture, and light. The moving patterns in the line show the passing of time and events and their relationship. Each person focus on different patterns depending on their experiences and observational skill. The relationship we make between objects and time are different, causing our perception of the world to be different and making us approach situations in different ways.

In my daily life I’m always connecting situations without noticing or sometimes I just discover them. They help me learn and see reality in different ways. Connections help us solve problems and make learning easier. They make a transition between events and we remember that experience that brings to our mind what we have learn.

The Focus (Work)

These videos focus on a smoke that I noticed going up from the back of Powell Campus Center. It called my attention how the smoked kept going up in a same frequency for a some time and then it changed. I used effects to bring focus to the smoke’s pattern and distort other objects.

For the photos, I used the Kaleido effect again to explore how the buildings and sidewalks get distorted and form new patterns.

These videos are another example of how I played with the format of the video to accentuate patterns in the water.

I took this video with an app named Kaleido that makes us see a whole new composition of the space. It takes recordings from different angles and put them together, this creates interesting patterns that make us forget about what we’re seeing and brings us a new dimension.

In these videos I asked a friend to throw rocks at the water to capture the lines going up formed by the pressure and weigh of the rocks. I also played with the video’s format, making the space more interesting and pleasant for the sight.

In this videos I take a look at the stream found on the line approaching it from different perspectives. I used the ipod’s app IMajiCam to change the video’s: brightness, contrast, hue, format, direction and size. I played with all these elements to highlight the patterns on the water and create new ones.
